Numerous vulnerable people could lose their lives to fuel poverty, Age UK warns

Up to 183 vulnerable older people in Doncaster could die this winter because they are living in fuel poverty, a worrying report by Age UK warns.

According to an article in the local media, a report being put to Doncaster Council’s cabinet next week reveals the shocking figure, while also clearly stating that Doncaster is the third most deprived area in the Yorkshire and Humber region, and the 39th most deprived in England.

Vickie Ferres, chief executive of Age UK Doncaster, said older people in the town are often more susceptible to heart and chest problems in the winter because many of them worked in mining and heavy industry.

“Traditionally, older people spend a higher proportion of their income on heating. The fear of not being able to pay a bill is very strong for old people and the fear of getting into debt is absolutely terrifying.”

The Age UK representative also asked families and friends of older people to make sure their loved ones have well-insulated homes, flu vaccines, and get their benefits checked to make sure they are getting all they are entitled to.

For this reason, installing a low-cost, affordable system that will enable the elderly to both save on their energy bills and enjoy a good level of thermal comfort should also be taken into account, and this is specifically where the HeatSave wireless thermostatic radiator valves could really prove their worth.

The HeatSave wireless programmable thermostatic radiator valves allow users to attain even higher savings in terms of energy and bills, of up to an impressive 30 percent. They are extremely easy to set-up and install, since one will only have to unscrew the existing TRV by hand and replace with the HeatSave wireless radiator valve.
