  1. Local council in Enfield to launch new Smart Homes scheme

A local council has revealed plans to launch a new scheme aimed at helping private home owners bolster their houses’ energy efficiency, a recent news report in the local business media has been able to reveal.

Under their own Smart Homes scheme, Enfield Council offers government grants of up to 75% of costs towards energy improvements in homes to a maximum of £6,000. The grants are open to both owner occupiers, private tenants and private landlords.

Smart Homes also supports other energy improvements highlighted in a Green Deal Assessment such as double glazing, secondary glazing and or energy efficient boilers. The project is being run by Haringey Council, working with the boroughs of Enfield, Camden, Hackney, Islington, and Waltham Forest, and will run until the 31 of March 2015.

Wireless programmable thermostatic radiator valves offers the best returns in terms of energy efficiency. The HeatSave wireless TRVs enable users to set specific functioning times for each valve, and, since radiators are individually controlled, home owners are fully capable to maximise the zoning potential and reduce energy consumption in those areas that are not used for longer periods of time (as for example, dining or sitting rooms and kitchens during the night, etc.).

Additionally, the HeatSave wireless thermostatic radiator valves also provide an automatic exercising feature when unused for 7 days, whose purpose is to minimise seizing of radiator valves in warmer months.

All in all, the HeatSave TRVs enable users to achieve some pretty impressive savings, as they will help reduce your heating bills by up to 30%, especially when coupled with the HeatingSave Building Energy Management System.

  2. Village hall set to implement energy saving measures after securing council grant

A village hall is set to cut its gas and electricity bills after implementing a range of energy saving measures using a grant secured from the local council, a news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

Stevington Village Hall received the necessary funding from Bedford Borough Council under the Mayor’s Climate Change grant scheme.

Under the scheme, community projects that would reduce carbon emissions within Bedford borough can win a grant which would award projects up to 50% match-funding of between £5k and £20k for improvements.

Funding was granted to Stevington Hall to reduce the hall’s emissions and running costs by replacing the boilers and removing the electric showers, water heaters and electrical heating appliances. The single-glazed windows and doors were also replaced with double-glazed UPVC equivalents; reducing heat loss and meaning fewer draughts and cold spots. Both changing rooms at the village hall now also have radiator central heating and improved showers.

The hall’s chairman Steve Cole, who applied for the grant on behalf of Stevington Parish Council, said: “I can now report that all the work has been completed, improving the hall’s domestic water system immensely and providing much better control of our central heating system. It has given the village hall a new lease of life! We are looking forward to having reduced energy bills which means we can put more money into running community events.”

While new boilers and double-glazed UPVC windows will certainly help drive down energy consumption, the HeatSave thermostatic radiator valves could help village halls attain even more impressive savings, since facilities managers will be able to thoroughly control each radiator in the building.

The HeatSave wireless thermostatic radiator valves are the easiest to install and most cost-effective energy-saving measures on the market. They are particularly suitable for retrofitting, since one simply has to remove the existing TRV and replace it with the HeatSave unit.

  3. ‘Control Your Home’ campaign to help householders cut heating bills through better control of their heating system

BEAMA, the electrotechnical supply chain trade association, has recently launched a campaign to push for the implementation of heating controls in every home, with the aim of helping home owners cut their energy bills and reduce fuel poverty across the UK.

Government figures released this year show that nearly half of centrally heated homes in the UK don’t have both a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves, the minimum requirements for new systems under the building regulations.

At the same time, recent research at Salford University shows that adding these controls to a conventional central heating system reduces the running costs of that system by 40%.

The ‘Control Your Home’ campaign is a way for the heating industry to work together to help householders reduce their heating bills through better control of their heating system. This will provide real benefits to householders as well as extra business for the supply chain. A win win story!

“Fitting heating controls is a cost-effective energy saving measure that millions of households can do straightaway,” said Colin Timmins from BEAMA Heating Controls. “We need to show householders how a few simple controls can both reduce their bills and improve their comfort.”

“Heating controls can be fitted at anytime, not just when replacing a boiler. The campaign information will support installers advising their customers to fit controls, maybe when doing a boiler service or other visit.”

If you’re looking for a sure-fire solution designed to slash energy spending by controlling each radiator in your house separately, then the HeatSave thermostatic radiator valves are the perfect tools for this job.

The HeatSave thermostatic radiator valves are the easiest to install and most cost-effective and efficient energy management products on the market. They are particularly suitable for retrofitting, since one simply has to remove the existing TRV and replace it with the HeatSave unit.

Remotely controlled via an easily-accessible web interface, the HeatSave valves enable users to achieve impressive savings, slashing one’s heating bills by up to 30%, especially when coupled with the HeatingSave Building Energy Management System.

  4. Church asks for help on becoming more energy efficient

The reverend of a very old church in Calne is asking for help to replace the building’s broken-down heating system and also make it more energy-efficient in the process.

The Reverend Bob Kenway of St Mary’s in Calne has launched a £250,000 appeal for a new heating system and hopes to have the church warm by Christmas. The building on Church Street dates back to the 12th century and its heating system is 150 years old. For this reason, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that, after being temporarily fixed on a couple of occasions, it finally failed for good last January.

Up to 100 people attend the main Sunday service at St Mary’s. It is the only Grade I listed building in Calne and offers one of the largest enclosed public spaces.

HeatingSave has an extensive experience installing building energy management systems in a variety of locations, including older buildings and churches (read our case study of a successful HeatingSave installation at the Corstorphine St Ninian’s Parish Church in Glasgow).

When coupled with the HeatSave thermostatic radiator valves, HeatingSave can help churches save 20 to 30%+ on their energy bills.

The HeatSave TRVs are very easy to install and highly cost-effective, as they enable users to set specific functioning times for each valve, and, since radiators are individually controlled, maximise the zoning potential and reduce energy consumption in those areas that are not used for longer periods of time.

Additionally, the HeatSave wireless thermostatic radiator valves also provide an automatic exercising feature when unused for 7 days, whose purpose is to minimise seizing of radiator valves in warmer months.
