A local council has revealed plans to launch a new scheme aimed at helping private home owners bolster their houses’ energy efficiency, a recent news report in the local business media has been able to reveal.

Under their own Smart Homes scheme, Enfield Council offers government grants of up to 75% of costs towards energy improvements in homes to a maximum of £6,000. The grants are open to both owner occupiers, private tenants and private landlords.

Smart Homes also supports other energy improvements highlighted in a Green Deal Assessment such as double glazing, secondary glazing and or energy efficient boilers. The project is being run by Haringey Council, working with the boroughs of Enfield, Camden, Hackney, Islington, and Waltham Forest, and will run until the 31 of March 2015.

Wireless programmable thermostatic radiator valves offers the best returns in terms of energy efficiency. The HeatSave wireless TRVs enable users to set specific functioning times for each valve, and, since radiators are individually controlled, home owners are fully capable to maximise the zoning potential and reduce energy consumption in those areas that are not used for longer periods of time (as for example, dining or sitting rooms and kitchens during the night, etc.).

Additionally, the HeatSave wireless thermostatic radiator valves also provide an automatic exercising feature when unused for 7 days, whose purpose is to minimise seizing of radiator valves in warmer months.

All in all, the HeatSave TRVs enable users to achieve some pretty impressive savings, as they will help reduce your heating bills by up to 30%, especially when coupled with the HeatingSave Building Energy Management System.

Colleges who want to apply for a share of the £5 million College Energy Fund designed to help them implement energy saving measures can still do so until the end of the month, a media news report on this matter has been able to reveal.

Run by Salix, the scheme it is open to any further education (FE) college in England, Scotland and Wales which gets a majority of its income directly from the public sector. The loan will be paid back to Salix directly by direct debit on a six-monthly basis over four years.

In order to be eligible for this scheme, projects must meet a few criteria:

    – A maximum 5 year payback period

    – Less than £100 per tonne of CO2 over the lifetime of the project

    – Projects over £100,000 require a Salix Business Case

Salix was set up in 2004 by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and since then has funded £31 million of energy efficiency projects in 201 FE colleges.

Any modern building, especially those designed to meet the specific requirements set in the educational segment, will certainly require a very effective energy management system to be put in place, and that’s exactly where the HeatSave programmable wireless thermostatic valves can really come in handy.

The HeatSave wireless thermostatic valves represent a very good solution for the healthcare industry, where energy costs are 2nd only to labour costs. That’s because the TRVs can help customers slash their energy bills by up to an impressive 30 percent by allowing them to thoroughly control the heating patterns for every single one of their radiators.

Moreover, it’s quite likely that the hospital could benefit from the financial advantages provided by the Government’s Green Deal scheme, given the fact that the HeatSave valves represent an approved measure to control radiators under the aforementioned programme.

  4. ‘Control Your Home’ campaign to help householders cut heating bills through better control of their heating system

BEAMA, the electrotechnical supply chain trade association, has recently launched a campaign to push for the implementation of heating controls in every home, with the aim of helping home owners cut their energy bills and reduce fuel poverty across the UK.

Government figures released this year show that nearly half of centrally heated homes in the UK don’t have both a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves, the minimum requirements for new systems under the building regulations.

At the same time, recent research at Salford University shows that adding these controls to a conventional central heating system reduces the running costs of that system by 40%.

The ‘Control Your Home’ campaign is a way for the heating industry to work together to help householders reduce their heating bills through better control of their heating system. This will provide real benefits to householders as well as extra business for the supply chain. A win win story!

“Fitting heating controls is a cost-effective energy saving measure that millions of households can do straightaway,” said Colin Timmins from BEAMA Heating Controls. “We need to show householders how a few simple controls can both reduce their bills and improve their comfort.”

“Heating controls can be fitted at anytime, not just when replacing a boiler. The campaign information will support installers advising their customers to fit controls, maybe when doing a boiler service or other visit.”

If you’re looking for a sure-fire solution designed to slash energy spending by controlling each radiator in your house separately, then the HeatSave thermostatic radiator valves are the perfect tools for this job.

The HeatSave thermostatic radiator valves are the easiest to install and most cost-effective and efficient energy management products on the market. They are particularly suitable for retrofitting, since one simply has to remove the existing TRV and replace it with the HeatSave unit.

A sheltered housing provider has come under fire after residents complained about not being able to alter the heating in their own homes.

Concerned residents argued that Anchor, which manages High Lee House, on Broad Road, in Sale, Cheshire, installed a new boiler in the building in March. Since the boiler is controlled externally, residents are not able to alter heating within their flats.

People living in the building have organised a petition against the heating changes which 23 of the 25 flats have signed up to and have had several meetings with their ward councillor on this topic.

On the other hand, Anchor has claimed that the heating in High Lee is never turned off, but rather, is always maintained between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius. Andrew Appleton, district manager for High Lee House, said Anchor’s heating policy is based on Age UK advice and the company has “a duty of care to provide a safe, comfortable environment at all of our locations”.

When individual heating controls are required for an apartment connected to a central heating systems, the HeatSave wireless thermostatic radiator valves are the easiest to install and most cost-effective control system on the market.

  7. Smart meters will help consumers save “only 2%” on their annual bills, a committee of MPs warn

Consumers will save, on the average, just around £26 a year (or around 2% of their annual bills) after installing a smart meter, MPs on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) have argued.

Installing the meters will cost £215 per household, with consumers in 53 million homes being charged an annual amount on their bills to cover the cost, peaking at £11 a year in 2017. And in spite of these sizeable costs, smart meters will save only 2% on energy bills, say MPs.

“Despite consumers footing the bill, they can on average make a saving of only 2% on the average annual bill of £1,328 by the time the roll out is complete,” said Margaret Hodge, the chair of the PAC.

“Even this is conditional on consumers changing their behaviour and cutting their energy use,” she added.

Cutting energy use a direct result of behavioural change is by far the least secure method of attaining lower bills. However, if you’re looking for a way to actively cut your energy costs while in the same time maintaining a very good level of comfort wherever you might be around the house, then the HeatSave wireless thermostatic radiator valves are just the thing.
