Wigan Council to launch energy efficiency pilot scheme

A local authority in the Greater Manchester area has decided to implement a funding scheme designed to help home owners carry out energy efficiency improvement works, with the aim of reducing their heating and electricity bills.

Wigan Council has decided to set aside £400,000 in order to provide interest-free loans for residents and landlords who will then be able to apply for green deal cashback grants, a news report in the local media can reveal.

Funding for this scheme is part of a pilot project and the council hopes to provide wider regeneration benefits and energy savings. Only a few streets are elligible and specific houses in the area have already been earmarked as inefficient in terms of energy use.

The money the council is putting into the scheme will be matched by the government through the green deal scheme and the deadline for applications is 30 September.

Lord Peter Smith, leader of Wigan Council and ward councillor, said: ‘Local ward councillors have been looking to bring a big investment into this area for some time. We are making the most of a six-month window of opportunity to claim government funding for this work, which will improve the appearance of houses in the area and make them more energy efficient. This will reduce fuel bills for the occupants at a time when many people are struggling to make ends meet.’

Managing and creating specific heating zones for one’s house can actually help its occupants drive down their energy consumption levels with a minimum disruption to their level of overall comfort.
